This hinge is unique in that it mounts on the underside of the cowling, giving the top side a clean, sleek look.
If you have any experience with the standard piano hinge top mount, then you know how generic it is. It's very hard to install the pin with the natural curve of the cowl. It also allows a small gap between the oil door and cowl.
The use of this hinge does away with all of those problems. It is spring-loaded, so the door will stay in the up position while it is open.
Its best feature is safety. By having the door spring-loaded in the up position when open, it is always in your view when sitting inside the airplane. This way, you won't take off with the door open.
